Are Obama's supporters a sign of failure of US colleges?

Yes! The problem with schools today is that they educate students with specific ideologies, which does not encourage a free-thinking atmosphere. All but one of my history professors had a blatantly leftist bias, while most of the students were like-minded. I had actually been to Iraq, so I especially loved college students telling me what it's like over there. Also, many of the professors hate capitalism and try to promote socialist or even communist ideas. Multiculturalism is awful, since in reality, multiculturalism dilutes and destroys individual cultures.
