Contact my ex or not?

So for the first several months we were together, he was amazing. For the first YEAR we were friends, he was incredible. But towards the last few months we were together, things got ugly. He was WAY crazy jealous, he yelled a lot, rather controlling, and eventually ended things saying he couldn't handle a relationship. I tried to reason with him for over a month, saying I would help him through things and that I really liked him and we could even not be official if he wanted. But he wouldn't budge. We tried to stay friends, but he kept being jealous and eventually I had to cut all ties because he was getting that worked up over me even talking to another guy. But the sad thing is, I reallyyy miss him in my life. For close to 2 years we were perfectly fine. Do I contact him, or ume that I saved myself too much heartache and did the right thing cutting him off?
