Why did it take blood?

A previous question posted by Alabaster Flask prompted me to ask this one which I was thinking about. Why did it take blood, Christians, for our sins to be forgiven? There are different parts to the answer, but there is a root need for blood. What is it? I'm thinking Adam and Eve, original sin, and God's Word being final.
