Is there a safe way to get rid of black ants?

I have 2 kids and they both have really bad asthma. I didn't know if there was anything that didn't send off harmful fumes. I live in a apartment also, and my neighbor has them too. Could I just tell my apartment office to come and spray? If they do come spray is there anything I can use to prevent them? I tried salt...it didn't work. They are just really bothering me. They are only in the kitchen and my bedroom wall (on the backside of the building.)
