Is God really so loving as to send people like Gandhi to Hell to burn FOREVER?

Some religions do essentially teach that concept. I do not. Towards the end of 1 Peter 3 and also the beginning of chapter 4 you'll see that Christ went and preached to the spirits in prison (paraphrasing from the KJV), so that they could be "judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit." My interpretation is that those who did not understand or did not hear the gospel in this life will be taught the gospel in the next life. However, to think that people who didn't hear the gospel are lucky isn't quite right. A person's personality does not change from one life to the next. Ghandi would only accept the gospel in the next life if he would have accepted it in this life (uming he heard it properly and understood it).
